Why is Mold Remediation is so Expensive?

People is asking why is Mold Remediation is so expensive?

Here are the answers to that question:

1. The training to become certified is expensive and takes a lot of time. With the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) to become an Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT), you first must become certified as a Water Restoration Technician (WRT).

 2. The certified mold remediation technician must carry not only liability insurance, but also pollution insurance and professional liability insurance (Omission & Errors Insurance) this insurance is highly expensive. This is what they call an umbrella policy, which all three insurance is one policy and only a few companies write these policies. This insurance is very expensive for remediation companies have to carry.

3. Certified mold remediation companies are hard to find. Those who are good, tend to charge a higher for mold remediation. Some are now charging evaluation fees to come out to look at the home. (They usually credit the evaluation fee back to the project if they are awarded the job).

 4. The equipment used for mold remediation:

  • Commercial Dehumidifiers, used to dry the area after remediation to ensure the area is dried prior to the clearance inspection. Once the area has pass clearance, the dehumidifiers have to be cleaned with anti-microbials and the filters has to be replaced and these filters are at a cost of $25.00 each.

  • Air movers, used to dry the area after remediation to ensure the area is dried prior to the clearance inspection. Once the area has pass clearance, the air movers have to be cleaned with anti-microbials.

  • Negative Air Machines (Air Scrubbers), used to clean the air during the remediation process. They have to be left in the contained area until the clearance inspection has been completed. Once the area has passed clearance, the negative air machines have to be cleaned with anti-microbials and the filters inside these machines have to be replaced. The primary filters are at a cost of $25.00 each and the HEPA Filters are at a cost of $230.00 each.

  • Then you have the cost for respirators with hepa filters, hepa vacuums, tyvek suits, gloves, EPA approve anti-microbials and any other materials needed for the project. Then the labor cost is added to all this.

So, keep this in mind that mold remediation requires the right equipment, the right personnel and the right insurance. These type of projects are not for the inexperienced person.
